STEM WOW
The best time to spark passions for a subject on children is at a young age.
With hopes of fostering interest in STEM careers, Extension Educator Dr. Courtnye Jackson and Program Coordinator Maria E. Gutiérrez created STEM WOW Week.
A spring program for youth aged 7-10 years old, launched during spring break at the Ray and Joan Kroc Center in Chicago.
Because there is a huge gender gap in STEM education careers, the program was initially designed for young girls. However, it was expanded to allow students in the Kroc Center spring break program to participate.
Hands-on activities included working with robots, creating synthesizers with small parts and writing HTML code. Coding and pipetting activities were also part of the curriculum.
The spring program ended with a culmination expo demonstrating what the students had worked on during their break.
