SketchUp
Last spring, I had the opportunity to briefly learn about Google SketchUp during a STEM Expo in North Dakota by a group of fifth graders who were showcasing their forensic project during the event. In their presentation, they re-created the crime scene from pictures provided by their science teacher. The scene included the blood spatters, dead bodies, prints left behind and all those items that CSI agents collect as evidence. I thought it was pretty cool learning this from young students and was totally fascinated with their presentation.
The program includes multiple templates and there are options for construction documentation, landscape, architecture, interior and production design, and much more. You may also choose the system of measurement you'd like to use. I remember students were explaining and showing how they recreated the crime scene and explaining the measurements of the blood splatters. The program can do a lot and there are many different resources in place to help you access its various features. Depending on your level of experience and the way you like to learn, you can make use of video tutorials which I am currently looking at.
At the moment, I am working on a project for our team. Viewing a few SketchUp videos have served as excellent guides. Considering it is my first time, I've been able to re-create part of the picture. One thing for sure, it can be time-consuming since there is so much to learn. It will definitely take some time to get the hang of using this program effectively.
Lastly, Google SketchUp is easy to download and the basic program is free. Additional features are extra in the pricing.
