Gutierrez is a first-generation college graduate, born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The oldest of five siblings, mother of two. Learning English at the age of five was a bit traumatizing as she had never been exposed to a different language. Her kindergarten teacher, Ms. Miranda was compassionate and provided a lot of support during her first year of schooling.
As she transitioned from elementary to high school, college was a priority for her. Gutierrez attended Benito Juarez High School and was encouraged to enroll in the STEP Program which was held every Saturday. This was a college credit program, very competitive! Nonetheless, she was determined to join and was accepted during her sophomore year.
As the bus entered the campus, Gutierrez was amazed to see a large campus, various buildings and "different" students that she had never seen before. As she got off the bus and entered the campus, she was mesmerized by the halls, cafeteria, lockers, and rooms which were equipped with dry erase boards and not the traditional chalk boards.
